Re your query about dying Arctostaphylos uva-ursi.
The comment by Nick Turland of Missouri Botanical makes me think the
single plant purchased 20+ years ago by mail from forgotten Calif. source
may be mis-identified. It is Arctostaphylos but maybe not uva-ursi. It
is on a sunny sandy slope in arid, hot, humid USDA zone 9A (So.TX),
definitely alkaline but don't know pH. Receives no supplemental water
nor fertilizer for years. It has beome a dense thicket 4 feet tall,
almost as wide. Does A.uva-ursi ever get that tall? It was a foot tall
for years then jumped to 4 feet. Maybe the roots go a long way (down)
and finally reached ground water - like Mesquite. With only 3 inches of
rain this year it looks fine . Here it behaves as if it is part of the
native chaparral -- very drought tolerant. Do you know of any changes in
your ground water level? Just a guess.
