Nurseries in Southern France

What a pity that with the wonderful climate you have near Barcelona no nursery has specialized in interesting meditplants. Most nurseries I have visited in that area have industrial productions of commercial plants for garden centers.
 
Thanks Sean for your word on our nursery. Yes Clara and I try to grow a nice range (over 1500 species and varieties) of plants adapted to our local conditions : drought, wind, often cold winters, pooor limestone soils, and salt near the sea. We are near Montpellier, about three and a half hour by car from Barcelona. You are welcome Karin if you can come and visit our garden + nursery. If you can't come, we do ship towards all European Community countries, towards Barcelona there is no problem.
 
Now a few words on other interesting nurseries in South France which you might want to visit too.
 
Pepiniere Lewisia : Jean-Louis Latil in the South of the Alps has a collection of rare plants (many South-West US natives) , very cold and drought tolerant. National Collection of Penstemon and botanical Iris. Address : Jean-Louis Latil, 05300 LAZER
 
Pepiniere de la Foux near Toulon is known for the National Collection of Salvia. They also have a wide range of interesting mediterranean plants. Pierre Jourdan, 83200 LE PRADET

My friend Pierre Baud grows only fig trees, in the beautiful landscape of the Mont Ventoux. You have to visit (on appointment only) the nursery in September, Pierre will let you taste all the figs, over 100 different varieties, an incredible experience ! For rare fruit trees, you have to visit Pepiniere Jouve-Racamond, over 1000 varieties of almonds, apricots, peach, apples and the rest. Don't miss the sight of their testing field in bloom in Spring. Pepiniere Jouve- Racamond RN 7, 13670 SAINT ANDIOL
 
Thierry and Chantal Railhet have a small nursery with a collection of unusual Australian natives, including lots of Proteaceae. Etablissement Railhet, 31790 SAINT JORY

Michel Baches grows a wonderful collection of Citrus trees, probably the best in Europe. The funny thing is that the nursery is on top of a hill at the foot of the Pyrenees, quite cold and snowy in winter. By the way, that's not too far from Barcelona, Karin. Pepiniere Baches, 66500 EUS
 
Looking for bulbs ? Go and visit in the nice Camargue landscape Lauw de Jager's nursery, specialized in mediterranean bulbs. Bulb'Argence, Mas d'Argence, 30300 FOURQUES
 
Now if you have acid soil (how is the soil near Barcelona ?) the right nursery is Pepiniere Botanique Thoby. Jean and Frederique Thoby, very nice people, have travelled a lot in Japan, China, Australia and the US, and brought together one of the best European collection of plants for acid soil, Hydrangea, Camelia Pieris and so on. Quite a large nursery, with two production sites, one in Nantes (North  West) and the other at Gaujacq (South West). I advise you to visit the Gaujacq nursery, because very close to Gaujacq there is one of the best restaurant of the region ("Chez Darracq", at Amou, try the "Foie Gras aux figues"). Jean and Frederique also organize a very good flower show in their nursery each year around the 15 October, where all the nurseries I talked about (and many more) exhibit their collections.
