I saw a delightful low, small bright blue irid (3 petals) growing in lawns in Uruguay, sthn Brazil and nthn Argentina. It was flowering in late spring (there). I was told it is Alophila lahue which seems much mixed up with Herbertia by some botanists. I was enchanted by it; very low and starry, and a vivid blue. I have some seeds and hope one day to grow it happily in our 'lawns' - if it will acclimatise. Tigridias grow here and it superficially looked very similar so I remain hopeful of success. I'm ignorant of how widespread this little bulb may be as a garden escapee. I could understand that travellers from Califoirnia to South America would have found it sufficiently attractive to carry home bulbs or seeds.
