Right on Joe!
The citrus trees I inherited were planted in 2ft. "wells" ,deeper than
the surrounding soil. I have spent the last six years trying to keep the
surrounding soil away from the crowns. These must be the only trees in
Upland with their roots higher than their crowns!

I too, cry for the street trees planted by the city (who should know
better) which I pass by on the way to work. I have seen the wire these
are girdled with, cutting through the bark. It makes you want to indulge
in a little "prison break" with wire cutters.
And it's a good thing trees are as adaptable as they are. Other species
would never live under the conditions people impose on trees. My
favorite example is the "root guard" a round cylinder which supposedly
sends surface seeking roots downward, thus not cracking sidewalks. All
it must do is send those roots in a spiral!

Please do! You have the touch.
