nurseries from "Timothy Toohey"

I would echo what David Feix says about Northern California for those of us
in the South of the state. I have seen an enormous explosion of plants
available at good nurseries (e.g., Hortus in Pasadena) over the last ten
years. When I first came here, the selection of Eryngiums (to take a random
example) was nil. Now at least half a dozen are readily available. The
number of Salvias, Penstemons, and similar plants has also exploded. One
phenomenon that I have noted with interest is the increased availability of
plants that push the "zone" limits here in the South, including certain
Papaver species, Phlox, etc.

I attribute much of this growth in plant availability to the more
adventurous wholesale suppliers, such as Native Sons, Buena Creek, and
Monterey Bay.

To top it off, there are very active specialist societies,
botanic gardens,
and several wonderful mail order nurseries. (Digging Dog, Heronswood, and
Siskiyou immediately come to mind).

I guess I don't know what I am missing, but there is more
available than I
can handle!
