Proteas in Sicily

Hi there,

I've been enjoying the MGS chatline for some time, and now I have a question 
I wonder if anyone out there can help me with?
I garden in Sicily(Italy), and live in London, so my gardening watch word is 
low maintenance.  Western Sicily tends to alkaline soil, though I havent 
done a PH test on our soil. Last year on Tresco Abbey in the Scilly Isles, I 
saw  wonderful proteas which would look terrific in our garden in Sicily, 
however I read that they like neutral to acid soils, so is there any point 
in trying to grow these magnificent plants.?
