RE: Proteas in Sicily

If I could expand on this topic a little. Are there any proteas which will
withstand both mildly alcaline conditions and significant frost
occasionally. For example this year in the Languedoc area of southern France
the temperatures around Christmas went down to -7°C(19°F). This happens here
every few years, even -10°C is not unknown. I do not mind taking the risk of
loosing things now and then if they are quick to establish. So, basically ,
would I be wasting my time or not?

Subject: Proteas in Sicily

Hi there,

I've been enjoying the MGS chatline for some time, and now I have a question
I wonder if anyone out there can help me with?
I garden in Sicily(Italy), and live in London, so my gardening watch word is
low maintenance. Western Sicily tends to alkaline soil, though I havent
done a PH test on our soil. Last year on Tresco Abbey in the Scilly Isles, I
saw wonderful proteas which would look terrific in our garden in Sicily,
however I read that they like neutral to acid soils, so is there any point
in trying to grow these magnificent plants.?
