As a sporadic contributor to this forum, I'm taking the liberty
to publicize two slide shows that I'm doing in California next week, one
in San Francisco, and one in the Mother Lode area south of Sacramento.
Both are being presented for local chapters of the
NOrth American Rock Garden Society [NARGS],
Next MONDAY [3/25], 7:00 PM I will be at
the Mother Lode Chapter of NARGS in
Sonora, California. Meeting place is the Veterans Hall in Sonora.
Admission is free; the local contact is Barbara Henrietta
<horticult7@earthlink.net>
The title of the talk is "Alpines Front and Center". Despite the
title, which plays on plants with an "alpine look", most of the garden
plants shown are dwarf perennials and rock plants that are well-adapted to
Mediterranean climatic conditions. A number of gardens along the I-5
corridor from Portland OR to northern California are featured.
On TUESDAY evening(3/26), I will speak to the Western Chapter of NARGS in
San Francisco. The meeting place is the Randall Museum, 199 Museum Way,
There will be a potluck dinner and plant sale at 7:00 PM; my talk will
follow at 8:00. Open to the public, but there is a nominal admission fee
for non-members. For information, phone Ray Deutsch, 650-365-6136.
The title of this talk is "Mountains and Maquis: Wildflowers of
Corsica". I'll discuss the spring flora of Corsica, as seen on two weeks
of botanizing with the Alpine Garden Society. Featured plants include
orchids, cyclamens, crocus, the bizarre arum, Helicodiceros muscivorum,
and a beautiful amaryllid, Pancratium illyricum.
For more contact information, and more on these programs, see the NARGS
website <www.nargs.org>, go to <local chapters>, and then to the Mother
Lode and Western chapters.

I'll continue this trip with three days based in the Monterey Peninsula,
and then drive back to Oregon, probably via Routes 101 and California 1.
I'd be happy to hear of good current wildflower displays along my
itinerary.
If any one on this forum attends either of these talks, please
introduce yourself. I really enjoy matching faces with my email friends.
