Re the recent discussion of this plant and its
floriferousness or lack of it:
If the British glossy magazine Country Life gets to
the relevant bits of the U.S. and if you can find a copy of the Spring
Gardens issue of 21 March, you'll find there a splendid shot of V.
lycioides which demonstrates entirely what David said about its
floral fire-power under ideal conditions.
The embarrassing thing is that the shot illustrates
a piece by me! - about a garden in North Wales named Nanhoron - and at the time
of the discussion I'd entirely forgotten having seen this exceptional creature -
the existence of which of course entirely disproves my claims that in the UK it
only really flowers well under glass.
What's more, it was there sensibly planted against
a sunny wall and given plenty of room so that the stink never became a real
problem. Or so the owner claimed...
