The page mentioned is again active, but there is a new address:
http://www.mediterraneangardensociety.org/plants/Roldana.petasitis.cfm
I've added a breif article regarding my own experience with this plant,
which I still grow currently. It is sited on the top of a short retaining
wall at the bottom of a slope. It is hard to keep irrigated because of the
extreme slope of the soil and being southwest in exposure. It seems happy
enough though might be happier in a more sheltered spot. It is indeed
fairly drought tolerant as long as the weather get too hot. In the peak of
summer heat the leaves go a 'wilty' regardless of what we do (no doubt the
exposure) but come back up in the cooler evening air. It grows plenty big
and need a good pruning about twice a year.
While it might be best to move it back into a shaded and more sheltered
part of the garden, if we did so people would not be able to casually reach
up and stroke the leaves (something I've seen passerbys do routinely, even
bring people 'round just for this treat!). I just try to keep it look as
best as I can (its a little sad at the moment because it's second wave of
spring flowering is coming to an end and it hasn't yet 'grown in' from the
first heavy pruning).
