Further to Moira's comments about our climate come people may not be type of differences even over a small distance.
Where I am just outside Blenheim (in the NE of the South Island) the annual rainfall (about 650mm) is around half of what it is in Picton - which is only 15 minutes drive away.

And further to that again - we are about 60-70 miles from Picton and our annual rainfall is just about 2000mm (or 68 inches). The other critical determinant of weather in NZ is the mountainous nature of our terrain.
