Re: Poinsettia

I used to prune poinsettias in San Diego where they grew quite large.

It was very much as pruning very tall roses.

I pruned in mid to late February before they put on much new growth.  I don't think it's too late for you now, though.

I pruned back to good sturdy main canes and removed all terminal and lateral slender growth.  Canes were at least 1/2 inch (1.5cm) in diameter.

I always pruned to outward facing buds.

Overall, I probably pruned each plan back about 1/2 to 2/3, leaving less than half or even less than 1/3 of the mother plant.  Each pruned plant stood maybe 4 feet high.

We have a medium sized poinsettia in the garden.   It flowered at Xmas and we are not sure whether we should prune it now or when?.  There is nothing on the web about garden Poinsettia trees only the pot plant variety which I know well from Christmas in England. It has lost most of its leaves, looks a little sad because of the severe frost (-5) during January here on the Costa Blanca.  I don't want to lose it - any ideas?
