Hi Nan,
My sister also lives in the city and has a northern window wall exposure up
high. It's very moist there. Indoors she does very well with orchids and a
big yucca, 7'tall in a big pot. Perhaps your brother might like a yucca
instead? Outdoors on the balcony are pelargoniums that bloom happily.
