Cordyline Australis - peeling bark

I was out in the garden today and noticed a sort of big brown gap in
the bark of my tallest Cordyline australis. When I looked, the corky
"bark" was coming off. It seems like all of that corky bark is coming
off of the plant. We did have that cold snap in January where we
probably dipped down to about 24 degrees farenheit or so, but the
leaves were untouched. I even noticed that this same plant is going
into a flowering cycle. I don't see any signs that the plant is dying,
but the smooth wood underneath is a deep brown color, and I suspect
there might be mold.

Does this spell the end of the plant? I would've thought that if there
was cold damage, the first sign would have been a collapse of the
crown, rather than bark coming off of the trunk.

The soil it is growing in is essentially just sand, and it wasn't
sitting in water (in fact, that cold came with dry weather).
