Dasylirion wheeleri flower?

Hi,
 
I live in Santa Monica and have a front garden that I water once a month.  I bought a Dasylirion wheeleri three or four years ago, and a 10 foot flower spike appeared quite a while ago, not sure when.  The plant is beginning too lean.  This is a beautiful desert plant with treacherous spiky leaves. Has anyone grown it?  If so, what did you do with the flower spike?  I've looked on Google and can't find an answer.  Maybe it's too obvious to write about.
