Re: Ashes to ashes

There have been some similar problems in NZ too. I /have/ watched one person's ashes being scattered in the (reletively) wild. The former engineer of the Gliding Club to which I belonged for many years asked to have his ashes scattered over the club's airstrip and this was done, they were scattered from a fairly low altitude out of the window of the Club's towplane.

Here in Wainui, the Local Council has created a very pleasant "Garden of Remembrance" right at the end of our road - about half a mile from our house.

This has been designed as a circular rose garden, with asphalt paths separated by rose beds. People's ashes can be deposited (in their container) into the rose beds, and a memorial plaque attached to the concrete curb at the edge of the path. The result is very pleasing, although - so far - only the first quarter-circle has been completed. Since this part is alreayd almost full, the Council has recently agreed to complete the next portion of the full-circle garden.

Moira and I hope to be "planted" in this garden in due course, and have told our kids so.

Subject: Ashes to ashes

This message really should go to the alpine plant contingent. But I needed to share it nonetheless.
"So many people's ashes are being scattered on the summits that it's changing the chemical balance of the soil, fertilising it with phosophorus and calcium, to the detrmiment of rare alpine plants." !!  The mountains are in the UK: Ben Nevis, Snowdon, and Scafell.
There is a notice to those wishing to scatter: "try throwing them into the air on a windy day, or into a corrie so they disperse more widely, or under a tree on the lower slopes."
A corrie is a circular hollow.
Two friends' ashes are buried in my garden. No more interments here now that I have read the above. The ultimate pollution. bill grant
