Re: Calceolaria mexicana

Miriam,
You can either google my name, and pull up some reportage on several of my client's and own garden that have been featured in the past in Sunset Garden Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, and a short tv feature on our local KPIX Eye on the Bay program, or go to the slide set on Flickr at the Annie's Annuals web site, located here:

There are also photos of some of my work on the San Francisco Bromeliad Society's web site, at www.sfbs.org, look under garden tours once you get to the web site

I think you will find that my garden designs are not strictly mediterranean plant based, but what is possible living in a maritime influenced mediterranean climate. I do use some California native plants and also drought tolerant Mediterranean basin plants, but also combine subtropicals, bromeliads, succulents, proteas, etc from all over the world, but especially from Brazil, Mexico, Southeast Asia, the Andes mountains subtropical belt, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Even though I tend to mix the wet and dry loving plants all in the same garden, I tailor the drip irrigation systems to give each what they require, and try to minimize the summer irrigation demand, usually avoiding lawns in favor of paving/decks as much as possible.

One of these days I will finally get around to organizing and completing a web site, but it hasn't been a priority up until now as I had plenty of ongoing work. I will also have two of my favorite more recent gardens on the local Oakland Park Day School Secret Gardens Tour this April 25/26, 2009, should anyone else be interested, and it is for a good cause,(local neighborhood student scholarships). Should the mood strike, one of the houses is also for sale, and is located at 28 Vallejo Street in the Thousand Oaks neighborhood of Berkeley, soon to go on the market. I am not sure if there will be an on-line web site with photos of this garden soon, but it is a distinct possibility. I forget who the realtor's company is, but will post that info later if I remember to ask the owner.

Tell me what you think after you browse the photos, as I know I can often sound rather dogmatic about plants I like/dislike, but am more friendly in person!
