Re: Unusual Anigozanthus at UC Santa Cruz Botanical Garden

I have seen a number of un-labeled Anigozanthus cultivars at our local chain nursery, SummerWinds, too.  It has about seven locations in the area south of San Francisco and isn't too bad, as chains go.  I love Anigozanthus and just gave in and purchased several last fall that are labeled only by their colors, e.g., "pink" or "burgundy" or not at all.  If they have left today I'm going back to pick up a gorgeous short, red stemmed, yellow and orange one I saw over the weekend.  It was simply labeled "Kangeroo Paws" and was in a 6 inch pot.  The Anigozanthus plants seem to be quite successful these days, based on the number I see at SummerWinds and how fast they are selling.  If one doesn't mind buying unlabeled cultivars, there are a lot of choices now.

I have several large clumps of 'Big Red' and the tall yellow one with red stems (I've forgotten its name.)  Then, in another area burgundy and pink.  These do so well in my garden and their bright colors are so wonderful, lasting for months.

Nancy,
I've seen this one being sold unlabeled as to cultivar at the big chains such as Home Depot.  It's out there already...

Subject: Unusual Anigozanthus at UC Santa Cruz Botanical Garden

Everyone's lovely photos (thank you for starting this thread, David Feix) remind me of a plant we saw in August 2009 at UC Santa Cruz. Does anyone know if it is available in the trade? It's an Anigozanthus 'Herringbone', about 2 feet tall.  Here's a photo link:

I've watched their plant sales but haven't seen it listed. Thank you.
