Its not the dreaded Pine Bark
Beetle, I think its called Tomicus
piniperda.. You will find holes in the bark with the sap running down. I
really don't know how to cure the tree, if you can at all. We have
had two Pinus halepensis die from it.

I thought you all might be interested to see a couple of photos of a pine I pass by on campus about every day (I'm located just north of Monterey). It is in horrible shape but it's trying to survive. At first I thought it was some strange, small needled pine until I noticed that what I thought was another pine growing next to it was simply a branch from the same tree. I'm not sure what pine it is, but it could be Pinus radiata (the most common pine on campus aside from P. torreyana) with a really strange case of Pine Pitch Canker, which has mostly killed off another pine a hundred feet away. I've also included a link to a photo of the trunk that shows severe sap leakage and pinching:
