Re: Badly Diseased Pine

There are two other possibilities.

Tomicus destruens. This leaves a small volcano of sap at its entry point. Scrape this away to open up the entry point and inject a strong insecticide with a hyperdermic needle. We saved about 50 trees with about 50 volcanoes each this way. Tedious but effective, if caught early (ie before the larvae have started to circle the trunk).

Orthotomicus erosus. This does not leave a sap volcano and therefore there is no readily identifiable entry point. We lost two pines this way, because we thought had not been infected.

Its not the dreaded Pine Bark Beetle, I think its called Tomicus piniperda.. You will find holes in the bark with the sap running down.  I really don't know how to cure the tree,  if you can at all.  We have had two Pinus halepensis die from it.

First, thank you all for answering my last question about Brachychiton.

I thought you all might be interested to see a couple of photos of a pine I pass by on campus about every day (I'm located just north of Monterey). It is in horrible shape but it's trying to survive. At first I thought it was some strange, small needled pine until I noticed that what I thought was another pine growing next to it was simply a branch from the same tree. I'm not sure what pine it is, but it could be Pinus radiata (the most common pine on campus aside from P. torreyana) with a really strange case of Pine Pitch Canker,  which has mostly killed off another pine a hundred feet away. I've also included a link to a photo of the trunk that shows severe sap leakage and pinching:
