There are two other possibilities.
Tomicus destruens. This leaves a small volcano of
sap at its entry point. Scrape this away to open up the entry point and inject a
strong insecticide with a hyperdermic needle. We saved about 50 trees with about
50 volcanoes each this way. Tedious but effective, if caught early (ie before
the larvae have started to circle the trunk).
Orthotomicus erosus. This does not leave a sap
volcano and therefore there is no readily identifiable entry point.We lost
two pines this way, because we thought had not been infected.
