There are far too many Monterey Pines that have the disease here to make getting rid of this one a critical thing. It's widespread here and has been prevalent for a couple of decades now. Not all pines seem to get hit by it. The forest in Monterey while pretty badly affected, doesn't seem quite as badly hit as they thought (but it's still a terrible thing). Most of the trees in my neighborhood are now gone. Our neighbors lost a 30 foot specimen to the disease years ago. Once it hit the tree that tree declined VERY fast (I think it was dead in months after showing signs). Some trees seem to have it for years before succumbing. Interestingly I've not seen the Torrey Pines around campus get hit by the disease, as far as I can tell.
