Hi all,
I'm Bracey Tiede, from San Jose CA, where we have gardened with medit
climate plants for the past 25 years, starting with mostly California
natives and expanding to other climates as the plants became available to
us. We are USDA Zone 9b/10a, rarely going below 40F with a few hits per year
at 32F for a short time. The Pacific Hort Society's Gardening under
Mediterranean Skies events were eye opening and extremely useful in our
education about these wonderful plants.
We practice as many sustainable gardening techniques as we can on our nearly
quarter-acre property in the east hills. Rain barrels, French drain all
around the house to keep water on the property, proper plants for our
climate, arborist chip mulching mostly everywhere except for a small deck
next to the koi pond and a patio under a recycled grape stake ramada with
permeable grout around the flagstones are just some of the sustainable
gardening techniques we use. Lots of spring bulbs popping up right now.
My husband, Richard, is a salvia fanatic and we have more than 60 varieties
around the garden. Three raised beds for year round food plants. Low drip
irrigation is for the mostly pest free fruit trees - many citrus, fig,
persimmon, Asian pear. We don't grow stone fruits as they require more care
than we want to invest. I'm interested in South African bulbs and plants,
especially. We hope to travel there soon.
I'm also the Northern California Branch Chair for the Mediterranean Garden
Society, based in Greece, and we could use more members and ideas for
organizing events. Contact me if you want more information about this. I
joined the original email group right after it was founded by Sean.
Many thanks to Sean for keeping this going.
Cheers,
Bracey Tiede
