This is borderline Medit-Plant content, so please forgive the stretch.
I'm planning a trip in mid-May up California's Highway 49, which runs
through what's called the Mother Lode or the Gold Country, in honor of the
1849 gold rush. The road wanders through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada
mountain range, generally staying in a belt of grassy hills and oak trees.
I'll be going from Mariposa, near the entrance to Yosemite, up to Nevada
City to the north.
Has anyone gone looking at wildflowers in this area? If so, can you
recommend any particularly good areas in which to look? I am planning to
join a scheduled wildflower walk up in Nevada City, but I'd like to know of
other good places to stroll on the way up the highway.
We'll be taking a leisurely week to wander up, so short side trips off the
highway are not a problem.
Thanks!

ps. If I manage to get any good pictures, I'll post them on my web site
this summer.
