I think Avril's mystery plant is a Dracunculus vulgaris. That would have
all the characteristics she describes: maroon interior on the spathe,
greenish exterior, strong midrib in spathe, rippled spathe edge, and
pedate (I think) leaves. One thing Avril forgot to mention: the "fragrance".
It should smell pretty bad. Does it?
