I'm voting with Ellen - the description sounded like Dracunculus vulgaris
to me as well, with the greenish exterior/maroon interior and rippled
spathe edges being particularly convincing. The leaves are indeed usually
pedate, with larger plants having more leaf segments than smaller plants.
(The "flower" size is larger with large plants, too.)

which has the only picture I could quickly find on the web. It's just of the
inflorescence, not the whole plant, but I find that pretty distinctive.
