Re[2]: Name that Plant

Thanks, Ellen, Bob, Steve and Tristan. It's got to be a Dracunculus
vulgaris (what a name!), or Dragon Arum. I took a look at the picture
and, while that flower was somewhat shrunk, probably as a result of
having been removed from the stem, the mid-rib was unmistakable. It
does have a mottled stem, and I reckon I couldn't see the real leaf
construction because it was just a photo. Also, my sister did not
mention an odor. However, the last time I was there, there were 3 or
4 huge aromatic plants of another species (that shall remain nameless)
and I, for one, couldn't smell anything else when I was in her
backyard. You guys are a great resource. Thanks again! Avril Tolley

I think Avril's mystery plant is a Dracunculus vulgaris. That would have
all the characteristics she describes: maroon interior on the spathe,
greenish exterior, strong midrib in spathe, rippled spathe edge, and
pedate (I think) leaves. One thing Avril forgot to mention: the "fragrance".
It should smell pretty bad. Does it?

Ellen
