In Britain we have relatively few species of tulips which will persist
because of our damp summers. most tulips need a good summer bake to grow
well. Also, like lilies and Fritillarias, my impression is that most
tulips need a good soil or they quickly fizzle out. The best species here
seem to be T.sprengeri (late-flowering, red) which seeds profusely around
(the only tulip to do this), T.turkestanica, T.tarda, T.sylvestris and
varieties of T.fosteriana, praestans and kaufmanniana. most of the hybrid
tulips tend to fizzle out after a few years. I also have T.clusiana in the
garden, but that too seems to be dwindling - a shame since I love those
red and white flowers.
