Cyndi Norman is not correct, or her sources are wrong. Laurus 'Saratoga'
is a hybrid with
nobilis as one parent, I believe seed parent. Saratoga looks litte like
its putative parent. The
tree is multi-trunked, very fast growing, pest (all) free, and has the best
tasting leaves of
any laurus.
Mine grown in the Berkeley Hills is 12' tall x 8' wide in 6 years from a 1
gallon plant.
It blooms in very early spring and the flowers are huge compared to nobilis
and quite
showy as both buds and open blossoms. They are an ivory/green if that
means anything to
others.
It is an easy and amenable tree to grow...mine gets partial sun on and off
during the day. I
cannot recommend it highly enough over Laurus nobilis and any of its
cultivars. I don't
know if Saratoga Hort hybridized it but they certainly disseminated it
throughout
California. I would guess that it would do splendidly in most of our
state's microclimates.
It's major advantage (disadvantage) is that it doen't suggest use as a
topiary, Flora be
praised. It is however totally unpased by pruning and should be kept slim
and upright.
