Rosa banksiae

We have a variety here in Italy called R.b. "Purezza", thornless, hardy,
with white double, bigger and flatter flowers than those of the R.b. The
scent is not as good as. By the way I can smell a faint scent in lutea and
lutescens, sort of almond. I saw once a lutea growing into a Garria
elliptica, which is gray-green leaved, and the rose flowers came out at
the same time of the catkins - very neat. Has anybody mentioned the bark of
old Banksias? I find it is wonderful, it peels off revealing new layers of
the cinnamon/ maroon bark. Banksias here can easily be 10 metres (30
ft)high, and they bloom in March. There's one just out of my office door
which is parfuming all my room right now. They tend to show mildew after
wet winters (not this year).
Chinese roses also do very well (R.chinensis mutabilis is an old favourite),
and generally roses with a chinese breed. Do you know R. Fortune's double
yellow, aka Gold of Ophir? Early bloomer, it is the most beautiful old gold
with shades of apricot - described as only for mild climates and for the
collector in P. Beales' book, it is really breath-taking.
