Moles are typically most abundant where there's plenty to eat... and
mole dinners are usually insects, earthworms, and similar small soil
animals. Irrigation usually brings their prey closer to the surface,
where they do more damage by heaving plants.

Most people seem to recommend mole traps as the most efficacious
way to deal with moles, but I prefer to try to determine why they're
there in the first place. Many times, I find that they're chomping
away at white grubs I'd sooner not have around, and when the food runs
short, the moles leave. I can step freshly planted roses back into
their holes daily if I have to -- it's a lot easier than trying to
reduce a major grub population!
