Re: Desert Wildflowers in CA

I use Bill's email address now, and it was Holly Forbes, curator at the
Univ. of Calif. Botanical Garden who gave me the website for desert
flowers. Holly is also president of the local East Bay Chapter of the
Calif. Native Plant Soc.
Another good source for hotline wildflower information is the list
published in the Spring 1998 Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's IRONWOOD
QUARTERLY. 24 Hotline telephone numbers and 10 websites are listed, with
the months most likely to have flowers. Among the hotlines listed are:

Bill and I spent  Mon-Tues at Death Valley National Monument and found
wonderful wildflowers at lower elevations. The best sites for us were
Furnace Creek Wash coming in from Death Valley Junction to Furnace Creek
Inn, south along the Badwater road past Badwater, and going north from
Furnace Creek Ranch along the lower elevations. A friend reported that
Jubilee Canyon coming in from Shoshone was also good, as were wet springs
which had ground orchids. We were unable to get to higher elevations,
but the Ranger Station told us that flowers were only at the lower
elevations. There is a current list of wildflowers at the Ranger Station,
and a video slide show of the ones one is likely to find.
Does anyone know of a good field guide on desert wildflowers of the
Southwest? We have to combine many books-Jaeger, Munz, De Decker, Beachum,
Stewart, etc.....
Hope many of you can get out to see some of this.
