Papaver rhoeas can be found almost everywhere in the world, because the
seeds have travelled with cultivated cereals. The plants produce also a
lot of seeds, and this helps to disperse. I've read that they are native
from Iran (Mesopotamia).

        I don't think that there's no papaver rhoeas in California or
other parts of North America. Here in Spain, those plants grow in the
fields and roadsides. The use of herbicides is, sadly, killing this and
other species that grow in those areas.
