Isn't Lompoc right on the Pacific? (I drove through there once.)
I wonder how in the world it gets so cold there, while here
in San Jose, what, 200 miles north, 20 miles from the Ocean
it only went down to maybe 25F, curious.

Maybe some accomplished breeder will be able to produce a
backcross with the delicious fruit of the Loquat but without
the obnoxiously heavy fragrance of the Loquat flowers.

A section of our property, adjacent to a rather wild section of my
neighboor's property, is heavily infested with pocket
gophers (Thomomys sp.) The gophers have destroyed small Eucalyptus,
Quercus, and even Agave americana, all usually pretty unpalatable
to the little devils. I had previously thought the only thing i could
practically grow there was Juniperus sp. and the algerian Hedera sp.
but having now other place to put it I put an Eriobotrya japonica seeding
there about 1 1/2 years ago, its now almost 2 m tall and
growing beautifully, even though I didn't bother to put it in a
galvanized steel 'chicken wire' basket.
