To add to Deborah's posting on Crete, a fascinating book well worth
reading is Oliver Rackham & Jennifer Moody's "The Making of the Cretan
Landscape" (Manchester University Press, U.K., 1996, ISBN: 071903647X).
Rackham is a (historical) ecologist based at Cambridge University in the
U.K., while Moody is a (Minoan) archaeologist from Texas. It's a
fascinating read about how humans have affected the Cretan landscape since
Neolithic times (people first settled there about 8000 years ago).
