<<Caesalpinia sepiaria.jpg>> <<Caesalpinia sepiaria closer.jpg>> <<Rome and Caesalpinia flowers.jpg>> Some time ago, while we were discussing Caesalpinia gillesii (bird of paradise), I mentioned this climber to the group. Now it is in full bloom, and I thought I should post some images. I hope the photos won't clog your pcs, this is the first time I send pictures to the list and I suppose we are not encouraged to do it, but I don't have a web page of my own, and I cannot modify the Academy's one, so forgive me for once! I raised this plant from seeds, and planted it 5 years ago. It grows in the lower terrace of the gardens at Villa Aurelia (the pictures were taken from the road below) and climbs on an ancient tower nearby (third picture is from the balcony of this tower, looking towards the city). Caesalpinia is a huge climber, with the moral tendency of a Kiftsgate rose to climb on every available support. Last year it started the ascent to the Quercus ilex growing nearby, and some canes had reached the top of the tree at 30 ft when I had it pruned to a more reasonable size. I think the sight of the plant in full bloom is really beautiful, and I proudly noticed many tourists, who were visiting the big Fontana dell'Acqua Paola just below us, stopping to take shots of my Caesalpinia. It also sets lots of seeds, if someone is interested... Ciao, Alessandra Alessandra Vinciguerra Superintendent of the Gardens American Academy in Rome Via Masina,5 00183 Roma Italy Tel. 39-6-5846444
