Hi Nan,
I maintain two large gardens in Pasadena. One is Cynthia Hall's garden,
which was initially designed by Chris Rosmini. It is a plantsman's garden,
with hundreds of species of plants: 240 roses, smaller collections of
camellias, azaleas, geraniums, ornamental grasses, succulents, South African
bulbs, bearded and other irises, daylilies, abutilons, brugmansias,
columbines, phormiums, salvias, etc., etc., etc. If you want to see it, it
just happens to be on the PBS program tomorrow (Saturday, May 6. Consult
your local station for time). It was photographed in March, the day after
our biggest winter storm which brought us hail, so it was not at its best,
and they didn't photograph the parts that Chris and I thought were the most
attractive, but what the .... It also was featured in the spring, 2000
issue of Pacific Horticulture, and the Pacific horticultural Foundation is
having its annual party for donors there this Sunday. The other garden
started out as a Thomas Church design. The bones are still his, but the
planting is mine. It is more of a landscape garden, developed as a series
of outdoor rooms, on the lip of the Arroyo Seco, with spectacular views of
the San Gabriel Mountains and Mount San Gorgonio as a backdrop. I also
supervise the redevelopment of the garden of the Ninth Circuit Court of
Appeals (the old Vista del Arroyo Hotel). And I design gardens and write
about them on the side.
