Dear C. Carter,
The fasciation on my Echium is a semi-transparent membrane about 1/4-in.
thick in a "V" shape, the narrow end of the "V" at the base of the shrub
with the membrane stretched between two branches for about 3-ft., the
top of the "V" being nearly 2-ft. across. When I first noticed it, I
saw what appeared to be very tiny seedling-like growths coming in
various spots across the membrane, and more growth marching across the
top, the widest part of the "V". Now, about 3 months later, the
membrane is fairly well covered with tufts of growth, the entire top is
covered, and none of it has bloomed, though all the rest of the plant
flowered.
Joe Brosius told me it would do no harm, I could leave it alone or cut
it out. I found when I went out to look at it this morning that I could
not photograph it properly until the plant had been cut back sharply. I
shall do that this week and would be happy to share the picture with
anyone interested.
I'd never seen anything similar in my 50-plus years of gsrdening, and
was tremendously impressed that Joe knew exactly what it was and what I
could do with it! Just an abberation of nature, I suppose. Gardeners
never quit learning.

Anne, please ***describe*** the fasciation that has developed on your plant,
as I too, am fascinated! Thanks, C. Carter, CA/Z9
