Re: South African bulbs

Dear John,
With interest I examened your list. Your recommendation is to be used
carefully. It all depends on
1)'how much summer water is applied'
slightly humidis generally no problem, but 'lawn type' watering will
greatly reduce the population of quite a few species mentioned
'the ambient temperatures'
The combination high temperatures with humidity during dormancy greatly
increases the risk of rotting, while the same bulbs in heavy shade will survive
'the type of bulbs'
The bulbs without a protecting skin generaly benefit of moisture in the
ground(Fritelaria, Hyacinthoides, Ipheion)

"However, sometimes it is desirable to grow these bulbs with plants
that require summer water. I particularly like to combine them with
winter-dormant groundcovers that will mark where the bulbs are planted
and suppress weed growth during the summer rather than leaving them in
bare ground."

You raised an interesting point which was also brought in the IBS bulb
forum. Ground covers which absord excess moisture and lower the
soiltemperature is a good solution. Also the use of succulents or
mediterranean plants or shrubs a solution (see Olivier Filippi, Jardins secs)
