Tim,
If you lightly prune your lavenders every year to encourage compact 
growth, plant them in full sun with good drainage and in fairly low 
nutrient soils plus rarely, if ever water the plants, you can prolong 
their life span. Many people water and fertilize them with their other 
garden plants which leads to fast growth the first few years and then a 
fairly rapid decline. Water when first planted until the plants roots are 
established and then turn off all water.
