Hi Richard
Although I believe this was formerly grown in gardens here, the only
places I have actually encountered it is on roadside banks, especially
near the sea. From the sites in which I have seen it growing I should
say it would be distinctly tolerent of dry conditions and probably
demanding of very good drainage. It may be classed as a weed, but
certainly around Wellington it is well-behaved and by no stretch of
imagination could it be called invasive. Half a dozen clumps together on
a grassy bank seems pretty reasonable to me.
It is certainly very pretty when in flower. Most clumps are a lovely
clear pink, but some tend to mauve shades.
