I was also concerned that possibly Medit-Plants was the culprit, but I
don't think so now. What I think is the real problem, which would be the
case for you as well, is our web pages. Much of my spam comes from my work
e-mail address (not what I am using for this message) because that e-mail
address is listed on various web pages for our department. It seems that
there are various programs 'crawling' the web looking for such e-mail
addresses to build their lists from. So, unsubscribing from Medit-Plants
would not really help.
I am trying to eliminate e-mail addresses from web pages, but leaving a
hyperlink people can use to e-mail from but not displaying the actual
e-mail address itself. This is unfortunate as I feel it is useful to be
able to print a web page for filing and have the e-mail address displayed
as part of the page text.
Spamming seems to have reached an all-time high at the moment, and I even
suspect that people's real e-mail addresses are being used by spammers in
the 'From:' field, instead of the obviously bogus e-mail addresses we have
seen in the past. I am not sure what we can do to stop it all. I know
that responding to these e-mail does not help (even 'unsubscribing' using
the web page or e-mail address these messages are required to include in
their text!). I do know that all of the various ways in which web pages
force us to 'register' and 'sign up free' does generate a lot of spam - I
think your Yahoo groups can be a part of this.
Sigh! Such a waste of technology and such a burden on us all. I feel very
despondent about it myself at times! Perhaps someone else out there knows
some 'tricks' that could help us?
