Hi Nancy -
(I am sorry I have not been able to address this before now - my schedule
did not permit it).
It is unfortunate that you have been the victim of this
problem. Personally, I cannot fathom what inspires people to engage in
such confusing and destructive behavior as we are seeing increasingly these
days (I personally get several potential worm attacks each week!). It is
very disheartening.
I have also had this happen to some of the e-mail accounts I use, including
a Medit-Plants related account. This is the first time I have seen it
happen on Medit-Plants itself, though I know it has happened on other
listserv discussions. Because these e-mail successfully go under a stolen
e-mail account, they can have the access rights to listservs even if those
listservs are blocked to non-subscribers (i.e. the listserv thinks the
e-mail is coming from a legitimate subscriber).
I am pleased the Medit-Plants subscribers have such concern for others that
they would wish to take the time to communicate to those who would appear
to have become infected by a worm or virus, but I also understand your
frustration at being perceived the agent of this action!
Not an easy nut to crack. I hope that someday soon technologists will be
able to help solve these types of problems without sacrificing the freedoms
we should reasonably be able to enjoy as part of the internet.
Best regards,
