Another clarification:
I have never read or heard anything about any bees being seriously affected
by the mites in California except for honey bees (wild, commercial, and
those of hobbyists). The bees that have been wiped out (or almost wiped out)
are wild honey bees, which are the same species as the commercial honey
bees.
My understanding is that a lot of the other bees around (those that are not
honey bees) are unlikely to be affected much because many are solitary (not
social). That is, they do not form hives (but rather form individual
burrows, for example), so that makes it difficult for the mites to spread.
As I remember from last year, I would see other bees besides honey bees
around the flowers in the yard but at very low levels, probably about the
same level as the honey bees (just a couple scattered here and there).
However, I didn't really look closely.
