Dear David,
Yes, I do know that Agaves are new world species. I was reading about the way
this species clings to the side of cliffs, hanging downward and then turning
upward, and my mind formed a picture of aloes that grow in the same sort of
habitat in South Africa. My mind's picture was so vivid that it transmitted the
wrong word through my fingers. Sigh. Sorry everbody.
The aloe I was imagining is Aloe mutabilis, which hangs on rock faces of the
Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden and elswhere in South Africa.
According to Mary Irish, Agave vilmoriniana is native to the Mexican states of
southern Sonora, Sinaloa, Durango, Jalisco, and Aguacalientes.
I'd love to see either one of these plants in their native habitats.
