From what I gathered from a recent MGS talk at the UC Botanical Garden here in Berkeley, CA, Chip Sullivan's Garden and Climate seems informative. He spoke mostly about "passive lanscape design," and how certain achitectural features around the villa and garden helped its inhabitants deal with the cool winters and hot summers of the Mediterranean. I haven't had a chance to read the book in great detail so I hope I'm not making any grandiose statements. This also may not be what you are looking for at all, but it's still an interesting topic!
happy villa hunting!

Dear Colin
My wife was so taken by your email that she is keen to use your experience as part of an article she is writing. I'll let you see it when it's ready.
I posted the attached to rec.travel.europe via Google but no replies so far. Do you know of a better place to post?
"I'm looking for Stories about villas, and gardens, etc in the sun.
I hope members here can help with stories or advise me a better place
to post this request.
I am trying to collect ‘stories' to help my family and a couple of
friends who are embarking on buying a villas in the sun. I have chosen
Umbria in Italy, friend have chosen France, Spain, Florida.
If I can collect lots, or just a few good ones, I will build a web
site, or a book, to hold the archive and show the stories to a wider
audience. After all the UK TV programmes show us there are a lot of
people who are interested in villas in the sun.
Stories about all the stages of finding, rebuilding and basking in a
villa. And through the years, villa owners tales from times past,
recent and current ongoing. Family histories would be welcome."
Thanks and Best Regards
