most amazing addendum about this plant is that I have seen it thriving in unwatered Pygmy Forest soil type (heavy clay and hardpan...no drainage)

Susannah asked for a possible tall evergreen substitute for Buddleia davidii.
I have a small grove of seed-grown Abutilon vitifolium, from Chile. It is fast-growing (a couple of years to be way over my head), evergreen, and has mauve or white flowers. The large maple-shaped leaves are not touched by deer, probably because they are furry. I have not noticed any self-sown seedlings.
Mine are growing in the far corner of the property where the hose doesn't reach. They are competing with the roots of a Japanese heartnut and several Douglas firs. They'd probably do even better in good conditions.
