Re: Salvia splendens 'Van Houttii'

Title: Re: Salvia splendens 'Van Houttii'
Kate, no reason to have this  salvia shipped.  It should be readily available in 1s and maybe even 5s through your local nurseries as it is grown regularly by most of the wholesalers.  Van Houtii' is a fabulous salvia.  Leaves are bright green, almost lime green and flowers are deepest burgundy.  I've grown it for years in my garden.  It is a bit sensitive to cold and dies back some in winter (I get down into the high 20s) but springs right back.  I especially like it planted against Euphorbia cotinifolia as the euphorbia leaves complement the color of the salvia flowers.

Go for it!

Has anyone had experience with this salvia?  I've seen the variety as Vanhouttei and Van Houttei and web searches show it as an east coast ornamental.  I've had a request for it in Northern CA and I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to have it shipped.

It's got a bushy growth form, about 1 m in height.  Bright red flowers.  Any suggestions for a suitable analog?

Thanks, Kate
