Hi Kate -
I am not sure what about Salvia vanhouttei catches your attention - I haven't actually grown this one myself - but here is a list of sages with red flowers that can grow well in our area:
Salvia blepharophylla Salvia cardinalis Salvia elegans Salvia fulgens Salvia gesneraeflora Salvia greggii 'Furman's Red' (& other reds) Salvia microphylla 'Scott's Red' (& other reds) Salvia regla
I grew a plant I knew as S. fulgens (some say it was S. cardinalis) for years, which flowered only in the fall/winter/spring when the weather was cool. It has large red flowers like the species you mention. I am not sure it would do as well for you up in hotter Sonoma (my plant was down here in Oakland, closer to coastal influence).

Hi,
Has anyone had experience with this salvia? I've seen the variety as Vanhouttei and Van Houttei and web searches show it as an east coast ornamental. I've had a request for it in Northern CA and I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to have it shipped.
It's got a bushy growth form, about 1 m in height. Bright red flowers. Any suggestions for a suitable analog?
Thanks, Kate
