I have about 5 different daylilies,
including smaller and larger ones. My experience was that those that got shade in the morning and all
afternoon sun simply did not bloom well. When I moved them to where they
get sun most of the day, they have bloomed nicely. I think they must have
a very long sun requirement, or perhaps very short dark requirement to bloom
well. My suggestion would be to move them to your sunniest location,
especially in Berkeley, and then make sure they don't dry out too much.
They really aren't all that drought tolerant, although with your temperatures
probably more so than with mine here in the foothills!
