Well, Jason, I did say that heat and hard bright sunshine, and therefore plants' reactions to same, are not things we tend to major in in Cumbria! Certainly it's often surprising how wide a range of conditions supposedly fussy plants are willing to put up with. And a good thing, too...

PS Just in case anyone on the list is holidaying in the UK this year: I'm just back from a working visit to Devon where I found two fine gardens which among their many delights contain a wide and flourishing range of michelia spp - John and Vanessa Marston's at Gorwell House on the fringes of Barnstaple, and John and Prue Quicke's at Sherwood, Newton St Cyres near Crediton. Both are regularly open to the public - the Quickes' every Sunday afternoon throughout the year - and both are very well worth visiting.

Hi Tim, Michelia champaca (or maybe it's M. alba) grows in full sun both here in San Francisco (chilly) and at the Honolulu airport (warm). So that's at least one that likes full sun. M. doltsopa, M. figo, M. platypetala, and others are fine in full sun here, but Irene knows how different our coastal fog-belt climate is from her hotter inland clime. M. yunnanensis but in
Cumbria UK - where it flourishes, a fact which
doesn't provide much info re
exposure to sun! Slightly more seriously, I doubt if
any michelia would
relish regular and lengthy exposure to real heat and
bright sun.
